Communities

Social impact is the positive change we create for our colleagues, customers, patients and communities through our activities.

Our purpose is to tackle social and health inequalities both within and outside the organisation. We do this by transforming empty spaces into lively community hubs, encouraging our teams to fundraise and volunteer and various other initiatives.

See how we can make a difference in your community.

Social isolation, financial pressures, and a lack of skills and fitness can all negatively impact people’s lives, as well as putting increased pressure on GP services.

We can work with you to transform vacant indoor and outdoor spaces at our sites into vibrant community hubs to improve your local population’s health and wellbeing.

Since 2019, we’ve created over 100 social prescribing hubs and green spaces for community and volunteer services such as support groups, activity groups, employment and adult learning.

Each NHSPS colleague gets two days a year where they can spend time away from work to volunteer in the community. This not only helps address social and health inequalities, but also personal and professional growth.

Last year, 17% of our colleagues (938 people) spent at least one day volunteering, adding to over 7,000 hours for over 100 different charities and community groups.

Some of the activities our colleagues got involved in were:

  • working at food banks and community centres
  • helping young people with professional development
  • helping people seeking asylum improve their business English
  • running mental health workshops in primary schools
  • supporting people with memory disorders through puzzle making workshops

The NHSPS Community Fund encourages colleagues to nominate and fundraise for local and diverse charities and community groups that matter to them. To help tackle health and social inequalities.

The Community Fund focuses on three key themes:

  1. Health and wellbeing for all: Improving access to quality healthcare and supporting mental and physical well-being for people and communities.
  2. Economic Empowerment and Poverty Alleviation: Addressing income inequality and economic insecurity by breaking down barriers to upward social mobility and breaking the cycle of poverty.
  3. Safe and Healthy Environments: Ensuring all communities have access to a clean, safe environment and resources necessary for a healthy life.

We support 27 different charities and community groups across England each year. If you'd like to learn more about the NHSPS Community Fund and how to apply, get in touch.

We understand how important it is for everyone to feel welcome and supported in our spaces. Our goal is to create inclusive buildings that everyone can navigate with ease and dignity. We're constantly refining our approach to designing spaces that prioritise patient wellbeing and keep communities in safe and compliant facilities.

Since 2017, we’ve partnered with AccessAble to create more than 400 access guides for our sites so everyone can feel prepared and confident about getting to and around our sites. You can find the guides on AccessAble’s website and our Property Search page

AccessAble regularly carry out audits to identify buildings and areas where we can improve accessibility. We build these recommendations into any new construction plans. So that all patients, regardless of their ability or disability, have a good experience when they visit one of our sites.
