Meet the NHS Open Space team: Darren Fahy, Open Space Portfolio Manager

Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at NHS Open Space? Meet Darren, who plays a pivotal role in managing customer accounts, improving systems, and ensuring a seamless experience for all users.

Hi Darren! Can you tell us about your role?

As the Open Space Portfolio Manager, I focus on customer account management, helping to resolve queries and issues, and providing system support. I work closely with our technical provider to ensure continuous system improvements, acting as a bridge between customer needs and technical solutions.

What experience do you bring to the team?

I have a background in facilities management, specifically in helpdesk operations and room booking systems. My journey into NHS Open Space feels like a natural progression, especially having worked in the public sector and understanding its unique challenges.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

There really isn’t a typical day! My work revolves around meeting customer needs and making the process as smooth as possible for them. This includes resolving customer cases and queries, addressing a wide variety of topics, from technical to financial. Every day brings something new to the table.

What keeps your role interesting?

No two days are ever the same! I enjoy the variety that comes with constantly building and improving NHS Open Space. This includes adding new properties to the system, mobilising sites, implementing updates, and addressing unique customer queries. I love building relationships with customers, understanding their needs and working to ensure they’re met. It’s rewarding to know that our work leads to smoother processes, better healthcare experiences, and ultimately enables more patients to receive care by making more bookable hours available.

Tell us a bit about you!

Outside of work, I’m currently training for the Manchester 10k run in May. I also love to travel, especially to European cities I’ve never visited before. I tend to arrive with no fixed plans and figure it out as I go. Recently, I’ve explored Copenhagen and Brussels, and I have Lisbon and Iceland next on my list!

What’s next for you and NHS Open Space?

On a personal level, completing the Manchester 10k is my top goal right now. Professionally, our team is focused on continuously enhancing the customer experience, ensuring the system meets their needs and supporting the future of NHS Open Space.
