Health inequalities are a big challenge in Southampton. With men in the least deprived areas living 8 years longer than in the most deprived; for women the difference is 4.7 years.
NHSPS, Hampshire & IOW ICB and Southampton City Council are working together to make the best use of the land and buildings on the RSH campus. Allowing vacant and surplus space to be considered for other uses such as a nursing/care home and extra care housing.
In 2020 we partnered with HIOW ICB and local health trusts - developing a vision for how the Mary Seacole wing on the RSH campus could better be used and improved to support the ICB clinical strategy, reduce vacant space, and improve the carbon efficiency of the building.
We worked with the HIOW ICB regional team, developing the business case for a new 1,500m2 Community Diagnostic Centre within the Mary Seacole Wing. The business case was successful – awarding £11.2m with a further £1m awarded by NHSE and University Hospitals Southampton (UHS) funding the remaining £2.5m from their own capital budget.
We undertook the CDC enabling works and the non-radiology works, awarding the contract to Savills with a tendered saving of £600k from pre-estimates. The CDC enabling works are due for completion in March 2025. We led the procurement of all design and construction partners, and worked closely with all the tenants and onsite facilities management team to create a decant strategy for all services that would be affected by the creation of the new CDC.
We removed old expensive carbon gas boilers and replaced them with 4 air source heat pumps (ASHP), PV panels across the roof of the Mary Seacole wing, installing triple glazing, new and improved insulation and upgrading of the electrical supply with a new 500KVA transformer.
