The challenge

Thornbury Health Centre is a multi-occupancy NHS Property Services (NHSPS) freehold site that was in need of refurbishment internally as well as improvements externally for compliance and aesthetic reasons to improve staff and patient experience.

The solution

We worked with our Archus, Severn View Family Practice and Streamside Surgery to agree the full scope of works.

Thornbury Health Centre needed to remain operational the full duration of the project. Various options were considered to carry out the works as efficiently as possible but with least disruption to surgery services as possible. Typically, access was made available to no more than two rooms at a time and each proposed area for refurbishment was under strict time constraints and weekend working was carried out.

Fortnightly progress meetings were held and attended by all parties to discuss work programme, site issues and progress. This ensured all parties were kept updated and informed of progress throughout the duration of the project, and alerted to any services that would be interrupted as a result of the works, thus ensuring any disruption to normal services was kept to a minimum.

Works began in January 2020 and were due to complete in May 2020 but due to COVID-19, they were temporarily suspended from March to May. Works were therefore completed in min June 2020.

The impact

Thornbury Health Centre has been modernised and reconfigured for a better staff and patient experience. Thirteen consulting/examination rooms and three treatment rooms were stripped out (excluding suspended ceilings and lighting) and refurbished to provide new IPS and clinical wash hand basins, full redecorations, and new vinyl sheet flooring, and we added two new treatment rooms to assist with the increasing patient lists.

Furthermore, we refurbished the ground floor and first floor staff rooms and kitchens, the waiting area, replaced all the boilers, roof lights, steps and handrails on approach, external lights and resurfaced the car park.

As with all our construction projects, we aim to make our buildings more sustainable. Thornbury Health Centre has two new eco-friendly boilers to improve the efficiency of heating, therefore reducing heating bills. Additionally, the flat roof recovering and upgrading insulation will also add to an overall reduction in running costs, as well as a warmer, more pleasant environment internally.

Despite issues associated with COVID-19 and temporary suspension of the project, and limited access to consult/exam rooms, the project was delivered within the agreed revised programme and importantly, within budget.

Customer feedback

“We are very happy with the new look inside the health centre, the carpet has made a huge difference and our GPs are really happy with their rooms. It has made a huge difference to our day to day running having the extra GP room made – thank you.”
