Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group (BSW CCG), in partnership with NHS Property Services (NHSPS) and healthcare providers, has developed plans for a new integrated health care centre on land off Marshall Road, adjacent to the existing NHS Treatment Centre in Devizes.
On Friday 19 June, NHSPS submitted a ‘reserved matters’ planning application to the Wiltshire Council for its approval. This will confirm the appearance, design, layout, and other details of the health facility.
Despite the circumstances associated with COVID-19 inhibiting plans to hold a traditional consultative event, we will engage with neighbours and key stakeholders to make them aware that an application has been submitted. NHSPS has created a webpage so the community can access information about the project (https://www.property.nhs.uk/news-insight/news/a-new-integrated-care-centre-for-devizes/)
The plans for the new integrated health care centre will incorporate many of the services currently provided at Devizes Community Hospital. In addition, the facility will accommodate increased primary care capacity, out of hospital urgent care services, extended hours services provision and a range of other health care services.
Subject to planning and NHS business case approvals, NHSPS and our contractors, Kier Construction, intend to complete construction of the Integrated Care Centre before end of Summer 2022 and it will be open to patients shortly thereafter.
Tracey Cox, Chief Executive for BSW CCG, said, “This exciting £10m project will provide the residents of Devizes and the surrounding villages with much needed additional primary care capacity, as well as out of hospital urgent care and other health care services, reducing the need for travel to Swindon, Salisbury or Bath.
“The collaboration between GPs, other service providers, the CCG and NHS Property Services, means that we will build a centre which will not only provide the healthcare which local people need now but also well in to the future.”
Dr Richard Sandford-Hill, GP at Market Lavington Surgery and project board member said, “GPs and primary care colleagues across the Devizes and surrounding area can’t wait to have this additional space to provide enhanced services and have additional healthcare staff available for the day-to-day care of our patients.
"It will be fantastic to be able to treat patients in a modern, purpose built facility with access to all the resources and equipment that is being included in this project.
“It has been a pleasure to be involved from the start and have a real say on how this centre is being designed and built. I am sure all the staff and patients who use this building will benefit from it being created specifically for their needs.”
Andrew Strange, Regional Partnership Director for NHSPS, said: “This is a really interesting forward-looking scheme that we’ve developed collaboratively with our NHS partners to enable better patient care. The submission of this planning application marks a significant milestone towards the delivery of this state-of-the-art health centre that will help meet the objectives in the NHS’ Long Term Plan.”
